The Wonderful Ronald Weasley

I realize I haven't posted much about the actual Harry Potter series.  So, here is a sort of persuasive essay-ish thing that I wrote for my fellow blogger, She-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named, because she called Ron a 'pimply redhead' and also said something about how he isn't brave.  I hope this proves her wrong.  (By the way, you can disregard any comments about fanfiction, they're a reference to one of our many fanfiction conversations.)

I'm putting this picture in because I feel like it... and because I love Ron's expression when he's looking at Hermione. <3

Those Are Freckles, Not Pimples!
(or, A Biography/Persuasive Essay of the Life of Ron Weasley that Shows Why He is So Brave and Just Generally Awesome)
Ronald Weasley was born on March 1, 1980 to Arthur and Molly Weasley.  He lived in the Burrow with several brothers, (and, by sometime next year, a sister,) doing whatever it is magical children do.  Actually, I really don’t know much about his early life, so we’re just going to skip to the important part: his Hogwarts years!
Ron began attending Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry at age 11 in 1991.  He quickly befriended the one and only Harry Potter, and conflicted with the one and only Hermione Granger.  He was sorted into Gryffindor House, the house of the brave and chivalrous, so you already know he’s going to be great.  Ron’s first act of bravery was on Halloween night when he and Harry went to save Hermione from the troll in the castle.  She was crying in the bathroom because Ron made fun of her, but the key thing here is that he rescued her when he didn’t have to.  And thus an amazing friendship was born.
Later in the year, Ron went with Harry along with Hermione to stop Quirrell (or Snape, as they believed at the time) from stealing the Sorcerer’s (Philosopher’s, etc.) Stone.  He took charge during the game on the giant chess board, even going so far as to sacrifice himself in order for Harry and Hermione to be able to move on.  If that’s not heroic, I don’t know what is.
Moving on to second year, this was the year the Chamber of Secrets was reopened and students (plus a cat and a ghost) were turning up Petrified.  Eventually Hermione was Petrified as well (sadness).  So, when Hagrid was accused of being the one opening the chamber, Harry and Ron followed the spiders into the Forbidden Forest to find out what was going on.  As if it wasn’t bad enough to have to go into the FORBIDDEN FOREST, Ron was mortally afraid of spiders due to an incident in his childhood.  Yet he went anyway, faced his fears, and was nearly killed when he and Harry encountered a group of giant arachnids known as Acromantula.  Keep in mind he’s only 12 or 13 years old at this point.
Ron also went down into the Chamber of Secrets with Harry when they figured out how to open it so he could help save his sister Ginny.  They didn’t really know what to expect down there, but they still went.
Third year!  Ron’s bravery is best shown in a single quote from the book: “‘If you want to kill Harry, you’ll have to kill us too!’ he said fiercely, though the effort of standing upright was draining him of still more color, and he swayed slightly as he spoke.”  He said this when they still believed Sirius Black was a mad murderer, so it shows that Ron was willing to die for his friend.
Fourth year was admittedly not one of Ron’s better years.  First he argued with Harry when he thought Harry put his name into the Goblet of Fire, which really wasn’t that logical.  Did he really think Harry would say to himself, “Hey, I’ve almost died like, four times in my life!  I’M GONNA GO ENTER A DANGEROUS, POTENTIALLY LIFE-THREATENING TOURNAMENT!”  Um, no.  Then he clashed with Hermione when she went to the Yule Ball with Viktor Krum.  That was probably out of jealously though.  And let’s be honest, if Ron was perfect, he’d be an unrealistic character.
On to fifth year, Voldemort’s back and Umbridge has arrived at Hogwarts, so of course this means the formation of Dumbledore’s Army.  The D.A. was a secret group of students led by Harry, who taught them defensive magic since they weren’t learning any in Defense Against the Dark Arts class.  And of course, Ron joined.  He was practically a founder of the group.  He also stood by Harry when other students like Seamus Finnigan didn’t believe that Voldemort was back.  (Incidentally, I’m sad Seamus didn’t believe Harry at first.  I love him!)  Then, he took part in the battle at the Department of Mysteries.  He went a little crazy there, but so would you if you’d been attacked by brains.  That’s not an everyday occurrence.
Sixth year, again, not the best year.  Ron got together with Lavender Brown – honestly, where did SHE come from?!  How many times did they actually talk to each other before they got together?  However, it was sort of Ginny’s fault Ron wanted a girlfriend so desperately.  She said to him, “If you went out and got a bit of snogging done yourself, you wouldn’t mind so much that everyone else does it!”  If there’s anything positive that came out of Ron and Lavender’s relationship, it showed that Ron was indeed able to find a girl to date on his own who wasn’t Hermione, despite the beliefs of a certain fanfiction author I told you about…  Anyway, on a slightly related note, there was an adorable Ron/Hermione scene in the Half-Blood Prince movie in the hospital wing after Ron was poisoned, and I was very disappointed when I went back into the book to read it and discovered it wasn’t there.  (“He’s been poisoned, you daft dimbo!  And for the record, I’ve always found him interesting!”)
Finally, we have seventh year, or at least, what was supposed to be seventh year.  Ron was part of the rescue mission to get Harry safely to the Burrow; he was one of the seven Potters used to try to confuse any Death Eaters they encountered.  He and Hermione also went with Harry on his quest to track down and destroy the remainder of Voldemort’s Horcruxes, a quest with many risks and dangers.  At one point, under the influence of one of the Horcruxes they’d found, he argued with Harry and left for a while, a decision he’d immediately regret.  Eventually, though, he managed to find his way back, saving Harry from drowning in the process.  He was brought back by the Deluminator, and as he believed, it was given to him by Dumbledore because Dumbledore “…must’ve known [he’d] run out on [them].”  Harry disagreed and corrected him, saying, “He must’ve known you’d always want to come back.”
Once, Harry, Ron, and Hermione were captured by Snatchers and taken to Malfoy Manor when the Snatchers realized who they’d caught.  In the manor occurred (in my opinion) one of the best Ron/Hermione moments in the series, and one of Ron’s best moments in general.  When Narcissa Malfoy told Fenrir Greyback to take the prisoners to the cellar and Bellatrix ordered him to leave Hermione, Ron said, “You can have me, keep me!”  He was willing to sacrifice himself in order to save Hermione, which was a very loving, selfless act.
At last came the Battle of Hogwarts.  Ron participated in the battle, and really, anyone who fights in a war is very brave.  I don’t think I would’ve stayed for the battle if I’d had the option.  He survived the battle (in which he got to kiss Hermione right in the thick of it – very romantic! – and also lost his brother Fred – very tragic) and went on to marry Hermione.  The pair had two children, Rose and Hugo.
Which brings me to the final point of this biography/essay.  If everything I’ve written still hasn’t convinced you of Ron’s bravery, then look at Hermione.  Unless you’re like the aforementioned fanfiction author, would someone like Hermione really marry Ron if she didn’t think he was good enough for her?  You decide.
That concludes my paper on Ron Weasley.  I’m sure I could go more in depth here, these were just reasons I thought of off the top of my head.  I hope this has convinced you that Ron is indeed very brave and just an awesome person all around.

Harry Potter on YouTube!

One of the ways Harry Potter fans express their love for the series is through videos, and there are some great ones out there!  Here are some of my favorite Harry Potter-related videos.  They'll make you laugh, they'll make you cry... Or at the very least, they'll entertain you if you're bored.  I hope.

Harry Potter in 99 Seconds
It seems everyone's heard of this video - the entire story of Harry Potter in just over a minute and a half.  Warning: This song can easily get stuck in your head.  Especially once you have it memorized.

Potter Puppet Pals - The Mysterious Ticking Noise
Also a very well-known video, this one is really fun to try with a group of friends!  I've done it with my brother and a few cousins.  Very catchy.  All together now: Snape, Snape, Severus Snape...

Literal Harry Potter Trailer
This video will tell you what's happening in the trailer for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - literally.  Very, very minor language warning here, nothing too bad though.

Hogwarts - Which House Are You?
Normally, I hate when people make fun of Hufflepuff House since I'm one myself.  But this video made me laugh!  "I'm a Hufflepuff!"

Sorted This Way
A parody of Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" for my fellow Puffs!  (In case you were wondering, this is what we do in our common room in our spare time.)  Not Literally (the makers of the video) also made a parody for Slytherins, and I think they might be making songs for the other houses too, so check them out if you're interested!

100 Harry Potter Things To Do
Still waiting for your Hogwarts letter?  (They really should stop using Errol to deliver them.)  Well, here are 100 Harry Potter things to do when you're not at Hogwarts!  Bring some magic into the Muggle world!

The Potterer
Not only is this video about the Harry Potter books, it stars two actresses from the Harry Potter movies - Jessie Cave and Evanna Lynch (Lavender Brown and Luna Lovegood)!  Jessie has her own YouTube channel, pindippy.  I haven't seen all her videos, so I don't know how good they are, but feel free to look them up.

Ron and Hermione - Fix You
This list wouldn't be complete without my favorite video about my favorite ship!  This video has Ron and Hermione clips set to the song "Fix You" by Coldplay.  I loved it the first time I watched it and have loved it every time since.

Kids React to the Deathly Hallows Trailer
It's about, well, kids of various ages reacting to and answering questions about the trailer for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.  I love "This is creeping me ou- wait, was that Voldemort?" and "Ah! So smart! Ah! So good! Ah! So... Ron-attracted."

How Harry Potter Should Have Ended
Of course, the ending for Harry Potter was great, but here's another possible ending...  The people of HISHE (How It Should Have Ended) have made tons of alternate endings for different movies, so if you like this one, try looking up some of your other favorite movies!  (I love the Hunger Games one!)  Minor language warning here, too, but it's Ron's catchphrase, so if you've seen Harry Potter, you've heard it.

Pottermore
The song in this video asks the question we all asked before getting sorted on Pottermore: What if Pottermore sorts me in the wrong house?  Even if you've already been sorted, it's still a good song.  I love Alex Carpenter's videos.  I also love wizard rock music, go listen to some if you never have. There's some pretty awesome songs out there.

Sirius Black and the Secret Keeper
Last but certainly not least is the first video in what I believe will be a series about... um... Sirius Black and a Secret Keeper, I suppose.  It looks pretty epic so far, so check it out.  I'd really love to be in a Harry Potter fan video like this.  Seriously, if you're making your own little film and need another actor, I'm your girl.  (I really have no acting experience, but that's not important.)

This turned out to be kind of a long list, so it should keep you busy for a while.  Hope you enjoy!!

Casual Vacancies and Wallflowers

So, it's been pretty much exactly a month since I last posted.  But there really doesn't seem to be a lot going on in the world of Harry Potter.  I honestly can't think of anything that's happened recently, with the exception of LeakyCon.  However, there is some stuff that has to do with people related to Harry Potter.

Speaking of LeakyCon, an annual Harry Potter convention, it was held this year in Chicago from August 9-12.  I didn't go, even though I would've loved to, it sounded like it was really fun.  For anyone out there who's a Starkid fan, they performed a musical at LeakyCon called "A Very Potter Senior Year" or something along those lines (don't quote me on that though).  I don't really follow Starkid very closely, but I've heard it's going to be put up on Youtube for people who didn't get to see it.  Don't quote me on that either.

And if you're looking to plan your trip for next year's LeakyCon, it seems that they're already making preparations!  LeakyCon 2013 will be held in TWO cities - one in Portland, Oregon from June 27-30 and another in London, England from August 8-11!  For more information, go to http://leakycon.com/2013.html.

Now, in other news, it's just about a month until J.K. Rowling's new adult book, The Casual Vacancy, is released!  I'm sure many Potter fans are counting down the days until it comes out.  As for me, I'm going to be perfectly honest and say I'm not certain how excited I am.  Yes, I think I'd like to read it, but it is for adults.  Plus, I just started reading both Divergent and The Fellowship of the Ring, which I believe are both the beginnings of trilogies, and both are very interesting so far, so who knows how long it'll take me to get through all those books?  Therefore, I'll probably get around to reading The Casual Vacancy sooner or later, but I think it's safe to say you won't find me at any midnight releases or anything like that.

For all you Emma Watson lovers, her movie The Perks of Being a Wallflower comes out soon as well!  Based off the book of the same name, (and directed by the book's author,) Emma stars in this along with Logan Lerman and Ezra Miller.  I'm looking forward to this movie, though I'm hoping it's very, very different from the book.  I read the book, and frankly I didn't think it was that great.  Plus there were some parts that were quite disturbing that I really hope they don't show in the movie...  But if you want to find out a bit more, check out http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1659337/.

That's all I really have at the moment.  I'm sure the minute I click 'publish' I'll think of something else to say and kick myself for not thinking of it before, but until then...  Turn to page 394. :)

I'm Back!

I just realized how long it's been since I posted on this blog!  But I'm back, and hopefully I'll be posting more often.

Let's see, what's going on in the Potter world?

Well, first of all, myHogwarts opened to the public, I believe it was about two weeks ago now.  I signed up for it again, as beta users couldn't use their old accounts.  I have to say I kind of miss the beta version - I liked the old layout better, and it doesn't seem like people in the dorm are interacting as much as they used to.

However, I do enjoy listening to wizard rock music on the Wrockbox, as well as attending events in the auditorium.  I have gone to two events so far: a showing of part 1 of "Sirius Black and the Secret Keeper," which seems like it's going to be some sort of series, and a showing of the "Battle of Hogwarts" documentary.  I liked watching both of them very much.

The 2012 Olympic Games just began, and those of you who watched the Opening Ceremonies may have noticed three Potter-related appearances.  I was watching with my friend, and we both started laughing when we saw Kenneth Branagh (Gilderoy Lockhart in the Chamber of Secrets film, I hope I spelled his name right).  Why?  I don't know.  But he was good.

Second was the author of the Harry Potter series herself, J.K. Rowling, reading from what I think was Peter Pan.  I didn't start crying like I heard some people did, but I'm just not a very emotional person, so don't feel bad if you were one of those people.  My friend and I were excited to see her.

And finally was the giant puppet thing of Lord Voldemort rising up.  My friend and I found this extremely hilarious and were laughing hysterically the entire time it was shown.  I don't know what other people thought of it, but I thought it was very funny.  Especially when the Mary Poppins army showed up.  I think my life is complete.

Oh!  And Rupert Grint (Ron Weasley in the films) got to carry the Olympic torch!  How awesome is that? :D

Speaking of J.K. Rowling, are you counting down to the release of her new book?  It's only about two months away!  It comes out on September 27, if I'm not mistaken.

That's about all I have for now!  Until next time!

She-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named: "Hedwig's Theme" Played on...Water?!

Talk about some of the talented Potterheads out there!
Known as murayu74 on his YouTube account, this Japanese Potterhead has some amazing skill! Watch as he plays "Hedwig's Theme" from the Harry Potter soundtrack using only glasses of water!

It practically sounds like the original, am I right?

Aside from Harry Potter, he has made 27 videos of him playing other songs with his water glasses. An example would be Holiday songs like "Silent Night," but I can't really tell how famous the other ones are because, well, I'm not a music fanatic, I'm a movie devotee!

Check out his account if you want to listen to some more relaxing remixes: http://www.youtube.com/user/murayu74

Slytherin out!

The MTV Movie Awards!

The MTV Movie Awards were held last night.  I didn't actually watch them, but I did check up on the results periodically, and as this blog is titled THOUGHTS of a High School Potterhead, I figured I'd share my thoughts on the results for categories Harry POtter was nominated in.

Best Male Performance
Winner: Josh Hutcherson as Peeta Mellark in The Hunger Games
In this category, you could probably guess it was Daniel Radcliffe who was nominated for his role as Harry Potter.  I was slightly disappointed in the results, though not surprised.  The Hunger Games seems to be the next big thing now that Harry Potter is over.  Now, don't get me wrong, I love The Hunger Games.  They're one of my favorite book series next to Harry Potter, and I attended a midnight premiere of the movie.  I just hoped that maybe Harry Potter would win since they don't have any more movies coming out, but The Hunger Games does.

Best Female Performance
Winner: Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games
Emma Watson was nominated in this category for her role as Hermione Granger.  Again, though, this was to be expected.  See the above paragraph for my thoughts. :)

Best Kiss
Winner: Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart in The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1
Now, I couldn't help being upset about this one.  I'm going through a huge Ron/Hermione shipping phase and really wanted Rupert Grint and Emma to get the award.  Plus, look at it this way.  The Ron/Hermione kiss was built up to for seven and a half movies, and we finally got the big moment in Deathly Hallows - Part 2Though it was different than in the book, I still enjoy it very much.  Rob and Kristen were kissing in the very first movie.  How do I know this if I've never seen the Twilight movies?  They won the Best Kiss award in 2009 for the first film.  They also got it for New Moon and Eclipse, for that matter.  Why can't we share the love?

Best Cast
Winner: Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint, and Tom Felton in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2!!
This award was kind of a shock to me - a good shock, of course.  After seeing the Best Kiss go to Twilight, I was feeling pretty hopeless about anything going to Harry Potter.  Then, lo and behold, I found out the Best Cast award had been given to Harry Potter!  Only Daniel, Emma, Rupert, and Tom are listed, though I originally took it to mean the entire cast.  But whoever you're talking about, you have to admit that the Harry Potter cast is pretty awesome.  I was quite ecstatic when I saw these results.

Best Hero
Winner: Daniel Radcliffe as Harry Potter!!
Harry Potter managed to pull out another victory in the Best Hero category.  This seems to be a very new category, and voting took place through Twitter.  Harry took the lead and was able to keep it until the awards show.  I was happy to see Harry win this.  It might not be a major category, but a win is a win, so I'll take whatever Harry can get.

Best Fight
Winner: Josh Hutcherson and Jennifer Lawrence as Peeta Mellark and Katniss Everdeen vs. Alexander Ludwig as Cato in The Hunger Games
Here we had another Hunger Games win.  Daniel and Ralph Fiennes had been nominated for their fight as Harry Potter and Voldemort. I have already shared my thoughts on The Hunger Games,  so go back to the beginning if you missed them the first two times.  The Hunger Games seemed to do very well in this awards show.

Best Movie
Winner: The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1
Was there really any surprise here?  Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2 was nominated, of course, but it almost seems to be certain that Harry Potter won't win any best movie awards it gets nominated for.  Not to mention the fact that every single Twilight movie to date has won the Best Movie award.  I've never seen a Twilight film, so I suppose I can't judge, but I find it very hard to believe that it has been the best movie of the entire year for four years in a row.  It's beaten not only the last three Harry Potter films, but also some movies that I have not seen as well but that I've heard are very good.

And that's it!  At least Harry Potter didn't walk away completely empty-handed this year (and Tom Felton has won twice in past years for his role as Draco Malfoy) so I'm not as disappointed as I was expecting to be.  And anyway, you could always put a positive spin on things, as Mugglenet.com's podcast Mugglecast did.  They tweeted "Ultimately, Potter won all the awards.  Because Wizarding World Hollywood is literally TAKING OVER the space where the MTV Awards were held."

How It All Began......

There are millions of Harry Potter fans throughout the world.  Everyone's love of the story had to start somewhere.  Here's how mine began.

I first read the books in maybe fourth or fifth grade.  My mom and my brother started reading them first, and my brother had brought the first book to read on a long car trip.  When he fell asleep, I decided to pick up the book and start reading.  I went on to finish the books before my mom and brother did.

Sure, I enjoyed the books, but I didn't love them.  I read them just for fun and didn't really speculate about who would die next or whether Snape was good or bad.  I also didn't see all the movies, only the first three or so.  I didn't even want to see Half-Blood Prince when it was in theaters because I didn't want to watch Dumbledore's death.

Fast forward to November 19, 2010.  A date I remember well, because not only was it the premiere date of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1, it is the birthday of one of my good friends who passed away from cancer.  She was a Potter fan, and her parents had invited me, my mom, and my brother to go see the movie.  Of course, we went.

I loved that movie.  I thought it was so awesome.  Some people don't seem to like the movies that much, but I really enjoy them.  I ended up watching all the movies that I didn't see before.  Deathly Hallows - Part 1 and possibly some influence from one of my friends who is Potter-obsessed got me more into Harry Potter.

My love of Harry Potter continued to grow. I went to see the midnight premiere of Deathly Hallows - Part 2 with my mom, brother, and some of our friends.  I started a Harry Potter Facebook page that I admin with two of my friends.  Of course, I began writing this blog.  I also write fanfiction and wish I was a good artist so I could draw fan art.  I talk about Harry Potter with my friends and play Hogwarts with my cousins.  There's just so much fun stuff you can do with the world of Harry Potter.

There you have it!  That's how I became a fan of Harry Potter.  And I'm so glad I did.  I honestly don't know what I'd do with my free time if I didn't.

Romione vs. Dramione

When it comes to shipping, I have a minor conflict.  I'm torn between a canon and a non-canon ship.  Those would be Romione (Ron/Hermione) and Dramione (Draco/Hermione).  I honestly don't know which one I like better.

First is Romione.  Ron and Hermione became friends in the first book, and eventually they became more than just friends.  Yes, they had their arguments, but what friends haven't?  Their friendship always came through in the end.

You could tell they were meant to be together.  How Ron disliked Viktor Krum in year four, and Hermione disliked Lavender Brown in year six.  How Hermione was upset when Ron left her and Harry in Deathly Hallows.  How, later on in that book, Ron was in distress during Hermione's torture.  You could go on and on.

There's no other way to put it; they're just so perfect together.  Some might say that Hermione deserved better than Ron.  Why?  Why isn't he good enough for her?  They loved each other, and that's what matters.

Next is Dramione.  When I first heard about this ship, I hated it (I may have mentioned this before).  I didn't think it would work.  The more I thought about it, however, the more I liked it.  Now, I think it would work.

I honestly don't know how to describe it.  The only way I can think of would be to compare it to Lily and James Potter, who didn't like each other in school and then ended up getting married.  The same could happen with Draco and Hermione.

I don't believe that Draco was that bad of a person.  Okay, so he was a bully in school, but again, so was James.  Draco sort of redeemed himself in Deathly Hallows, and I think he could've turned out all right.  There really isn't anything in the books that could suggest them being together, but I've seen other ships that are the same way (like Fred/Hermione, I have nothing against it but where did it come from?).  I can't explain this ship any other way than that IT WOULD WORK!  Just think about it for a moment.

There you have it.  Ron and Draco, two very different people, but both people that I think could end up with Hermione.  Who do I like better?  I don't know.  I'm not sure if I'll ever be able to choose.

'Battle of Hogwarts' Documentary Review

May 2, 1998 - a day that will forever be remembered in wizarding history.  It was a day of triumph and tragedy, a day of love, friendship, courage, strength, and perseverance.  It was a day that would change people's lives.

It was the day of the Battle of Hogwarts.

Fast forward twenty years after the battle, and you'll have the setting of the fan-made documentary 'The Battle of Hogwarts'.  The website myhogwarts.co.uk held a showing of this film to commemorate the anniversary of the battle.  Curious to see what it was about, I decided to watch.

'The Battle of Hogwarts' was short (under an hour long) but sweet.  It included several interviews with people who were involved in the battle.  Some characters, such as Luna and Ginny, were people we know; others weren't recognizable (at least to me).  The trio of Harry, Ron, and Hermione wasn't included in the documentary.

I really enjoyed this film.  Seeing how they imagined the characters' lives in the future was interesting.  Though it didn't really include much other than the interviews, I was intrigued and didn't want to miss a word they said.  They included several perspectives, from Dean Thomas to a remorseful former Death Eater.  There was even a touch of humor in one spot.

One bit of confusion for me was with Harry.  They said he had become an Auror, yet later before Ginny's interview they said that the two had moved to a house in the Muggle world.  This didn't seem to make sense to me.

Otherwise, though, 'The Battle of Hogwarts' was an enjoyable documentary.  It is definitely a must-see for any Harry Potter fan.

She-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named: How Much I LOVE Neville Longbottom!

You all remember our guest writer from the previous article, who poured out her loathing at the man known as Alan Rickman.  Now she's back to gush over a different person.  I present the ever-charming, ever-obsessing, ever-enthusiastic, not-an-evil-Slytherin... She-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named!
One day -- it was a Saturday, I believe -- my dear friend and I went to see the second part of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows." Within the first half hour, a face appeared out of the gloominess and created a glowing halo that left me dumbfounded.

Who was this dashing fellow, this man who was not a Jack? (That meant "common man" in the olden days, like the 1300s.) The answer appeared before my eyes as my brain racked through files of the memories of my life, and that's when I realized, with a tear dripping down my cheek, that this man, this handsome man who can be compared to the 20-year-old Jack Dawson (okay, maybe he's not as attractive as Leo was), was the chubby little kid...

 Neville Longbottom!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, oui, si!!! It was HIM!!! That pudgy child with the pet toad he always managed to get lost, along with everything else he owned? It was HIM!! And he had blood on his face!! And even better, it made him look awesome!!!

Now, let's talk about the evolution of Neville Longbottom. In the first movie, he was that forgetful Jack (tee hee) who was undergoing the butterball phase, as my mom puts it. (Basically you have all this chubby fat that will go away after having some major growth spurt and blah blah blah etc.) He was like that until the fifth movie...? And then it hit.

His hair, once straight and overgrown, was trimmed to a perfect cut. His wimpiness transformed into a brave, roaring lion from Gryffindor. (Rawr.) Soon he was the one battling the bad guys, facing his fears, while Harry tried to escape his problems by hiding in a dense forest. By the last two films, he is a man of wax indeed. (More Shakespearean language for you Romeo and Juliet fans!)

To conclude this daring, fanatical article, Neville Longbottom could replace Stalin as the Man of Steel. (Just puttin' some history class on your already frying brain.) Because you all know he's that attractive!

   Just admit it!

With undying, prancing love for Neville and Jack,

She-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named :)

"Give me my Neville; and when he shall die,
Take him and cut him out in little stars,
And he will make the face of heaven so fine,
That all the world will be in love with night,
And pay no worship to the garish sun."
~Neville and Sam, Act III, Scene II

(... Fine, it was Romeo and Juliet, gosh!)

She-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named: How Much I Hate Alan Rickman

It started with a spark and grew into a raging fire of hatred. Ever since I had watched the 1995 movie "Sense and Sensibility" with Emma Thompson and Hugh Grant, my awesome opinion of Severus Snape turned into a glowing ball of fury for the person known as Colonel Brandon.

Let me just say that I am a huge fan of the British actress Kate Winslet. So when I put on my bucket list "See all of Kate Winslet's movies," I decided to watch "Sense and Sensibility." Another fact at that time was that I was reading Jane Austen novels, and I was a few pages into this spectacular story of two very different sisters. So of course when I realized Alan Rickman played one of the love interests, with his wrinkled forehead and overly large nose, my jaw dropped and I quickly tried to prove the theory -- that that wasn't him -- by searching the movie.

Unfortunately, it was him. And even more sadly, he was there to stay.

When Mr. Willoughby entered the picture, I was like "Oh, yes! He's cute!" But it didn't last, and soon Marianne (Kate Winslet) had her heart broken and Brandon was all like "I love you forever" and stuff like that. So when she runs out in the rain, risking her health, and he carries her in his arms bridal style, I was trying to drench the clouding thoughts of "She's way too pretty for him! He looks so old! Gosh, why doesn't she just stick with Leo??"

Next, there was the ending, where there was the wedding. And since I didn't finish the book I told myself, "Good, it's Elinor and Edward's wedding." Then my eyes bugged open when Kate Winslet appeared in a gorgeous dress with her hair all nice and done and there was Alan Rickman right next to her with his beady eyes and old man face.

So, to summarize this up, I strongly dislike Alan Rickman. That is all.

Now, onto Harry Potter. After this rant, I have realized: no wonder Snape didn't win Lily's heart! He's been rejected by many women. I think all he needs is a nice, big hug from Sam. Of course, I love Snape! I love Harry Potter. So in actuality I am a huge Snape fan, but I just don't like some of Alan Rickman's other characters. (*Cough* Colonel Brandon.)

Obviously.

With dear hate,

She-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named

Stop the House Hate

One problem that I have noticed in the Harry Potter fandom is the issue of house hate. Sometimes it seems that people don't like a certain house for whatever reason. The two houses I feel get the most dislike are Hufflepuff and Slytherin.

First is Hufflepuff. It feels like this is the least popular house. Is it because it's not mentioned much in the series? Is it because the actor who portrayed Cedric Diggory in the movies also plays Edward Cullen in Twilight? Or do people just not see what Hufflepuff has to offer?

I am a Hufflepuff myself, and normally people making fun of Hufflepuffs annoys me. A lot. I don't see what's so bad about being a loyal, kind, hardworking person. Just because we possess those qualities doesn't mean we completely lack the traits of the other houses. I may not be a Ravenclaw, but I'd consider myself to be a smart person.

If you want more evidence of what makes Hufflepuffs great people, look at the Triwizard Tournament. Out of all the brave Gryffindors, cunning Slytherins, and intelligent Ravenclaws, who did the Goblet of Fire choose as the most worthy Hogwarts student to compete? Cedric Diggory - a Hufflepuff.

So please, don't underestimate us Badgers. We're capable of much more than people think we are.

Next is Slytherin. The most common label to be put on Slytherins seems to be that they are evil. Yes, there have been plenty of Dark wizards to come out of Slytherin, but that doesn't mean that they are all bad people. One of my friends was just sorted into Slytherin on Pottermore, and she is not evil.

There are several examples of Slytherins who aren't evil. I feel that one of these people is Draco Malfoy. I believe that he wasn't truly a bad person. If he was really evil, wouldn't he have killed Dumbledore when he had the chance? Wouldn't he have identified Harry at Malfoy Manor? Sure, he was a bully to Harry and his friends, but so was James Potter in his Hogwarts days. Everyone makes mistakes. Draco Malfoy has honestly become one of my favorite characters.

Another example is Severus Snape. He may have been on the wrong side initially. He may have been horrible to Harry and the other Gryffindors. But in the end, he turned out all right. He started to go against Voldemort and support the other side. That must have taken a lot of courage and strength to go against the most evil Dark wizard of all time.

Slytherins are described as ambitious and determined. Since when is "ambitious" synonymous with "evil"? When you hear that someone is a Slytherin, you can't automatically assume they're a bad person.

Really, I don't see the point of house hate. The Hogwarts houses are supposed to be united, not divided. Each house has unique qualities that make it special, but that doesn't mean they can't work together. Keep an open mind, and you just might see how awesome the other houses can be.

Draco Malfoy

You can sail on a ship. You can ship a package across the country. Or you can ship two characters.

Ship can be short for 'relationship'. People in the Harry Potter fandom (and in other fandoms, too, I'm sure) ship, or pair, characters with just about anyone, it seems.

Two ships I like, both involving Hermione, are Romione (Ron/Hermione) and Dramione (Draco/Hermione). You can really tell in the books and movies how much Ron loves Hermione, and I think they're great together. However, I'm finding myself becoming interested in Draco falling in love with Hermione.

When I first heard about shipping Draco with Hermione, I thought, 'Oh, gosh, no, that would never work!' But the more I thought about it, the more I liked it. Now I'm even writing a Dramione fanfiction.

I really think that Draco could have turned out to be a good person. It almost seems like he and Harry were in similar situations. Sure, Draco wasn't locked up in a cupboard under some stairs for ten years. But neither he or Harry had a positive role model in their lives growing up.

I think that the reason Draco was the way he was is because he had bad influences. His parents and one of his aunts were Death Eaters, and he probably learned from them.

Of course, Voldemort was more of a threat to Harry than he was to Draco. But Dumbledore sort of mentored Harry, so why not Draco? If Draco had had someone like Dumbledore to guide and support him, maybe he wouldn't have been such a bad person. Deep down, I think he was a good person, and I don't see any reason why he couldn't have fallen for Hermione.

Mugglenet March Madness and a Bit More from Pottermore

When the phrase 'March Madness' is heard, many people would probably think of college basketball. Not the Potterheads over at Mugglenet.com. They have created a bracket of their own... for Harry Potter characters.

The HP tournament is currently in its "Elite Eight" stage. It pits Harry Potter against Nymphadora Tonks, Neville Longbottom against Luna Lovegood, Sirius Black against Severus Snape, and Hermione Granger against Minerva McGonagall.

There have been several upsets, including number six seed Tonks beating out number three seed Ginny Weasley, Colin Creevey (11) ousting Dudley Dursley (6), Xenophilius Lovegood (14) winning over Peter Pettigrew (3), and more recently, Ron Weasley (1) losing to Sirius (4).

If I had to choose a winner out of the remaining characters, I would probably predict Snape. People's like of Snape now due to the revelations in Deathly Hallows combined with their love of Alan Rickman (who portrays Snape in the films) seems to make him a fan favorite.

To vote for your favorite character, head over to http://www.mugglenet.com/marchmadness/.

In other news, Pottermore has opened a shop where fans can download the Harry Potter series in eBook and digital audio book form.

Books 1-3 as eBooks cost $7.99 each, while the rest are $9.99 apiece. Or, you can get the entire collection for $57.54.

The audio books are a bit more expensive. Books 1-3 are $29.99, and books 4-7 are $44.99. The entire collection is $242.94.

According to the Pottermore Shop site, "Harry Potter eBooks are compatible with all leading eReaders, tablets and smartphones," and the audio books "are compatible with MP3 players, including iPods and hundreds of other audio devices."

To check out the shop, go to http://shop.pottermore.com/en_US?c=USD.

myHogwarts Beta Opened

The Chamber of Secrets has been opened - or rather, myHogwarts has started to open to beta users. (Lame joke, sorry...)

Anyway, myHogwarts was (at least for me) a highly anticipated new website for Harry Potter fans to meet and interact with other fans, take Hogwarts classes, and more.

I have finally gained access to the site, and I'm here to tell you what it's like.

After activating my account, I read through an orientation about the world of Harry Potter beyond the books and movies. It covered topics such as wizard rock music, Muggle Quidditch, the Harry Potter Alliance, and Starkid (the creators of YouTube sensations A Very Potter Musical and A Very Potter Sequel).

Then, it was time to create my profile. It was a fairly easy process, just inputting information about myself and uploading a profile picture. And if you weren't happy with your Sorting on Pottermore or have your heart set on being in a particular house, never fear. myHogwarts lets you choose your house.

When I finished creating a profile, I was placed in a dorm with other Hufflepuffs (my house). Dorms, when completed, are made up of 10 people of the same house. These people are automatically added as your friends on myHogwarts.

Everyone has their own profile where you can see information about them. You can post statuses as well as post things in your dorm. You can add other friends, send messages, and "prod" people.

So in case you haven't guessed by now, myHogwarts is like a Harry Potterized version of Facebook. The layout is very similar, and there are a lot of the same features (prodding is like poking, it seems).

Not everything myHogwarts has to offer has been made available to beta testers yet, but there will be more added sooner or later. Right now, the profiles and dorms are open, as well as a wizard wrockbox (hope I spelled that right) to listen to wizard rock music. I haven't checked that out yet but I plan to very soon.

That's all I have for right now, but I will be sure to post more as I explore the site and more areas of the site are opened. I am so excited for this!

Pottermore and myHogwarts

For those of you waiting for entry to Pottermore, the wait is almost over. Pottermore Insider has revealed that the site will open in early April. An exact opening date hasn't been given.

Many Pottermore beta testers, however, are waiting for the release of the second Harry Potter book, Chamber of Secrets, on the site. I have heard a rumor that only one book will be released each year, but I don't know if that is confirmed or not.

Meanwhile, another Potter site will be opening to beta users soon - myHogwarts. From what I've gathered about the site, "students" at myHogwarts will be able to sort of attend Hogwarts. There will be classes with professors, online textbooks, and even homework. There will also be other activities, such as a myHogwarts choir.

myHogwarts will begin granting access on March 15. However, only people that got into beta testing on day one will be able to get in that day. Day two people will get in on March 16, day three people on March 17, etc.

Also, the entire site won't be available right away. They will open more and more things over time.

I am a beta tester of myHogwarts, and I am so excited to get into the site. Once I start, I will be sure to post a review on this blog. I am hoping that myHogwarts won't turn out to be somewhat of a disappointment like Pottermore, but from what I've seen, it looks like it'll be pretty cool.

For more information on myHogwarts, check out their site: myhogwarts.co.uk.

A Surprise from Ms. Rowling

First of all, I'm sorry for the delay in posting my chapter two analysis of Sorcerer's Stone. I promise it will be up soon.

Recently, Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling made a big announcement. She's publishing a new book!

Not many details about the book have been revealed yet. We don't know the release date, plot, or even the title.

However, Rowling's website, www.jkrowling.com, says that this new novel will be for adults. A note posted on the site reads, "Although I've enjoyed writing it just as much, my next novel will be very different from the Harry Potter series."

The site also says that more details will be given later this year.

Despite the fact that this new book isn't related to Potter, fans of the series still seem excited. There's been a lot of buzz on sites such as Facebook and Twitter. People appear to be interested in reading anything by Rowling, Harry Potter or not.

What do you think? Will you read Rowling's next novel? Are you disappointed that it isn't about the wizarding world? Feel free to leave comments!

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone Analysis - Chapter 2

SPOILER ALERT! I'm assuming if you're reading this blog, then you've read the entire Harry Potter series. But just om case you haven't and you don't like spoilers, I would suggest you not read this post.

Also, please note that page numbers are from the American paperback version of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.

Chapter 2, entitled "The Vanishing Glass," opens about 10 years after the first chapter of the book. There is no sign whatsoever that Harry is living in the house. Yet there is one child who is absolutely spoiled, and over the next few pages, we learn just how spoiled. On page 19, Petunia Dursley says that she wants "everything perfect on Duddy's birthday." Dudley is also disappointed on page 21 when he realizes that his 36 presents are two less than he had last year.

Harry is happy on page 22 when he learns that he won't have to go to Mrs. Figg's house and look at pictures of her cats. This may be unlikely but cats seem to point to involvement in the magical world. Over time, we see more and more cat connections: McGonagall is a cat in Animagus form; Filch has a cat named Mrs. Norris; Hermione gets a pet cat named Crookshanks; Umbridge is obsessed with the creatures. Could these possibly foreshadow Mrs. Figg's connection to the magical world later (with the exception of Umbridge, who is introduced after we learn more about Mrs. Figg)?

There is more foreshadowing on pages 24 and 25 to Harry's magical abilities. His hair grows unnaturally fast, an ugly sweater shrinks so it won't fit him, and Harry is transported to the roof of his school after being bullied. At this point we are certain that there is something unusual about Harry Potter.

The family heads to the zoo for Dudley's birthday, and it turns out to be somewhat fun for Harry. He gets to have a lemon ice pop and even is allowed to finish the knickerbocker glory Dudley is unhappy with (23). (By the way, a knickerbocker glory is a sort of ice cream sundae for those who don't know.)

Then, pages 27-28 are when we first see signs of Harry's Parseltongue abilities (though we don't yet know the name). He is able to talk to snakes, a quality we later learn is also possessed by Tom Riddle/Voldemort.

And speaking of the Dark Lord himself, a question speculated by many Potterheads arises here. Is this snake the same snake that would later be Nagini? Some say yes, others no. You decide.

Harry sets the snake free on accident and is punished, of course, by the Dursleys. He laments the ten long years he's spent with the Dursleys after his parents died in a car crash - or so he thinks. He remembers something strange about that night: a "flash of green light" (29). This is, as we now know, the light from the Avada Kedavra curse.

The chapter closes with Harry remembering odd people who have seemed to recognize him, but that normally, he has nobody.

And that finishes my chapter 2 analysis. Stay tuned for chapter 3!

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone Analysis - Chapter 1

SPOILER ALERT! I'm assuming if you're reading this blog, then you've read the entire Harry Potter series. But just in case you haven't and you don't like spoilers, I would suggest you not read this post.

Also, please note that page numbers are from the American paperback version of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.

Right from the very first sentence of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, we are introduced to the Dursleys and their personality. They are "perfectly normal" (1) hinting towards what they will be like later in the book.

Our first glimpse of the magical world comes on page 2. "None of them noticed a large, tawny owl flutter past the window." We will later learn that these owls are the mail carriers of the wizarding world.

Mr. Dursley encounters some strange people throughout his day. At one point, he bumps into a "tiny old man" (5). This seems unlikely, but could this man possibly be Professor Flitwick? We find out later in the books that Flitwick is a short man, and though he changes later in the movie series, he is at first portrayed as an older man. The man's squeaky voice could also match up with Flitwick's squeak when he sees Harry in class later in the book.

Much of the first chapter has foreshadowing. The strange events Mr. Dursley sees during the day and on the news hints at what is to come. He even hears talk of the family the Dursleys try to forget - the Potters and their son, Harry. We see more and more bits of the magical world.

On page 9, we see Albus Dumbledore and his Put-Outer, which we learn later in the series is called a Deluminator, and as we know, it will play a big role especially in Deathly Hallows. Dumbledore meets up with Minerva McGonagall, who can become a cat. They mention You-Know-Who, or Voldemort as Dumbledore calls him. The fact that he has a nickname such as "You-Know-Who" indicates that this is a person who is greatly feared.

On pages 12 and 13, the pair discusses Lily and James Potter's death. Dumbledore says that Harry is to be left with the Dursleys. From McGonagall's reaction and what we've seen so far in the book, this will not bode well for Harry.

Sirius Black, who we know will come into play later in the series, is mentioned on page 14. Hagrid is bringing Harry to Privet Drive and says he has borrowed the flying motorcycle he was traveling on from Sirius. Young baby Harry is left on the Dursleys' doorstep, completely unaware of his fame in the wizarding world.

After reading the series before, it was sort of interesting to go back and begin to reread the books again, but through a different lens. Hopefully as I continue to read through the story, I will discover more connections to future events in the book or later books. My notes on Chapter 2 are ready to go, so expect their analysis soon. Thanks for reading, and feel free to leave your own thoughts on the book!

Digging Deeper

When you read, how do you read? Are you the type that analyzes everything in the story? Who thinks that the dark clouds rolling in signifies evil or bad things to come? Or are you a person who reads for pleasure? Who thinks that those clouds simply mean the next event happened on a stormy day?

Personally, I'd definitely fall into the latter category. I mostly read books just for fun. For pure enjoyment. With the exception of school assignments, of course.

But that's about to change.

Over the next several weeks (maybe months) I'm going to try a little experiment. I'm going to try to dig down deeper into the first book in the Harry Potter Series, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. (Or the Philosopher's Stone, whichever you prefer.) I'm going to take a closer look at the world Ms. Rowling has created in these books. And I'll be posting what I guess you could call the results of my in-depth analysis on this blog.

Get ready, fellow Potter People. This high school Potterhead is preparing to dive in headfirst.

Moving On and Keeping the Magic Alive

A little over six months ago, the legend that is the Harry Potter movie series came to a close with the release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2. Tons of fans, including myself, crowded movie theaters for the midnight showing and continued to see the film over the next several weeks.

For me, it was my first time attending a midnight release. I didn't become a big fan of the series until I saw Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1, and some of the movies had already been released before I'd even read the books.

So I can only imagine how it must've felt for those dedicated fans who had grown up with Harry. Those who read the series and watched the films as they were coming out and stayed with it, from "Yer a wizard, Harry," to "All was well." It must've been so much more emotional for those people than it was for me.

And now that all the books have been published, all the movies have been released? What is a Potterhead to do?

It might be time to move on while still keeping the magic alive.

It seems that the stars of the Harry Potter films have already managed to move on. Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter in the movies) has been busy between his new soon-to-be-released film The Woman in Black, performing on Broadway in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, and appearing on television shows such as Saturday Night Live. Emma Watson (Hermione Granger) recently acted in the movie My Week With Marilyn. Rupert Grint (Ron Weasley) also has a film being released soon, Into the White.

Even though Harry Potter may have ended, though, it seems that it will never truly be over for its fans. The books will always be around to read, the movies will always be there to watch. I'm sure some people still discuss and debate the different aspects of Harry Potter. Facebook pages, Twitter accounts, and websites continue to have fun with the fandom. The Wizarding World of Harry Potter theme park is open for people to visit.

After all, as Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling once said, "Whether you come back by page or by the big screen, Hogwarts will always be there to welcome you home."

A Review of Pottermore

A long time ago, I believe it was nearly six months, Potterheads around the world tried desperately to gain access to Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling's newest project: a website known as Pottermore. One million people would get into a beta version of the site, and it would open to the public in October.

The public release hasn't happened yet.

Thanks to a friend, I was one of those lucky million people to get an early Pottermore account. But if you're one of those who hasn't gotten in yet, you're really not missing much.

In case you don't know, Pottermore is a website in which you go through each chapter of the books (though I think only the first book has been opened so far) and see a scene from each chapter. You can read material about the characters, places, animals, etc. as well as some material J.K. Rowling wrote but didn't publish.

There are some exciting things on Pottermore, such as potion making and the recently opened wizard dueling. I haven't done much potion brewing yet, and I'm still trying to figure out exactly how to cast spells, but they both seem very interesting. Reading the new, more in-depth material by Ms. Rowling herself that wasn't published in the books is also pretty cool. I enjoyed choosing a wand and getting Sorted near the beginning of the Pottermore experience as well.

However, other than the activities mentioned in the previous paragraph, Pottermore doesn't seem to be as interactive as I expected it would be. There isn't much to do in the chapters other than look at the scene and pick up objects whose purpose isn't really clear.

Also, as I said earlier, Pottermore has not been released to people other than beta users, even though it was supposed to be out in October. I'm sure there is a perfectly good reason for this, such as that the glitches on the site were more numerous or more difficult to fix than expected, but it doesn't seem fair to the fans that have been waiting for months now for access.

Hopefully there is still more to come from Pottermore. It sounded like a great idea when it was first mentioned, and I'm hoping that more will be added to the site. Overall, I think Pottermore is a site worth checking out (when you are able to), but there could be more done with it to make it a more interactive and exciting experience.

What are your thoughts on Pottermore? If you're a beta user, what do you think of the site? And if you're not, does this opinion piece make you feel better about not having an account yet? Post comments and let me know!

Welcome to my Blog!

Hello, and welcome to "Thoughts of a High School Potterhead"! My name is Melissa, and I am currently a high school freshman. I created this Harry Potter blog for my journalism class at school. I chose to write about Harry Potter because it is a great interest of mine (I am a proud Hufflepuff!). I read the books but didn't become a big fan until I saw the movie Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1. Now, I've seen all the movies in addition to reading the books, admin a Harry Potter Facebook page, have a Pottermore account, and own a wand set and a Pygmy Puff. I hope you enjoy my blog, and please remember that my own personal opinions may be expressed on this page.
